I Have A New Blog

I have a new blog, exclusively featuring bad baseball cards from bad baseball sets such as the one below. Sometimes I have a lot to say.  You can find the blog right here

Card of the Day #3: 2010 TOPPS #440A TIM TEBOW RC Gold Rookie Card Serial Numbered #/2010

This was found in a 36-card jumbo pack at Walmart marked down from $4.98 to $2.98.  You can bid on the card here until January 31.  The same 18-card section of the jumbo pack yielded the regular base card Tebow RC #440 which you can bid on here also until January 31.  And later the same day, a Topps Prime Retail jumbo pack (14 cards) yielded yet another Tebow RC, which you can bid on here until January 31.

The Incredible Adventure of the Hairstyle of Oscar Gamble During His 2 Stints With the White Sox

The picture on top is from 1977.  The card on the bottom is from 1985.

Opening Wax Packs of 1990 Donruss & Fleer Baseball Was More WORK Than Fun

Overproduction was the name of the game at both Donruss & Fleer for 1990.  And both companies made the same mistake Upper Deck did that year and didn't include a Frank Thomas rookie card in their base set, though the 1990 Leaf baseball set from the same parent company as Donruss did include Thomas in their 2nd series that year, and most of us remember how that turned out. These 1990 Donruss and Fleer sets had lousy designs and weak card stock. The rookie card selection wasn't good without Thomas and the players they did include as "rated rookies" in the Donruss set that year weren't very good.  The packs were usually just work to open - so many scrub players, so few great players and good rookies, no good inserts (just those stupid puzzle pieces with the Donruss and some other nonsense with Fleer, probably sticker nonsense) and unlike even the truly crappy set Donruss made in 1988, no alleged "short printed" cards. I don't sell junk and typically want nothing to do with 1988-1992 Donruss. People deserve better than what these sets delivered. Dogs deserve better than what these sets delivered.

2009 Topps Heritage Baseball Box Break (1960 Topps Design)

This is a break of an 8-pack box with each pack containing 8 cards except for those with an autograph or relic card (these packs have 7).  As you can see below, I found a game used memorabilia relic card in the final pack opened. Overall, I was not delighted with this product. While I enjoy the 1960 Topps baseball design and had a fair number of cards from the original set as a kid, this box was made up almost entirely of base cards with 61 of the 63 cards being base cards.  I enjoy lots of inserts, parallels, etc. such as found in the 2011 Topps Update Series baseball Walmart 72-card blaster boxes and other 2011 Topps baseball products.  There were 3 short printed hi numbers in the box as well. The cost was $11.98 at Kmart, marked down from an original price of $21.98. Each pack included a sealed piece of bubble gum - I would have preferred an additional card per pack as the gum is useless to me, though I understand they were trying to recapture the feel of opening a vintage pack to some degree.  The box design and pack design were very nice. There are gaps between packs in the list below:

1986 Donruss - Where Were They Then And Where Aren't They Now?

1986 Donruss packs were impossible to find where I lived.  Apparently, this was a common problem as the many card dealers of the day hoarded as many cases, boxes, and unopened packs of this product as possible due mainly to the presence of the Jose Canseco rookie card.  Canseco had an RC in the Fleer set that also but it was a split card with another player. And Topps didn't have a Canseco card until the update set. So packs of this product didn't show up at drug and convenience stores much and instead cost $5+ right off the bat from dealers.  Of course we all know how Canseco turned out - his 1986 Donruss rookie card is only worth a few dollars today.  The set did have some other nice rookie cards including Andres Galaragga and Fred McGriff, however it doesn't look like either of those guys will make the Hall of Fame.  The same can be said for Paul O'Neill, whose rookie card is in this set.  On the plus side, this set was NOT overproduced like Donruss sets beginning in 1988 and the funky weird design was quite distinctive and sinister, perfect for the Canseco rookie year.  Unopened packs are not uncommon today - because of Ebay and many other sources they are easier to find now than they were in 1986-2002.

1988 Donruss: Worst Set Ever

After a streak of 4 consecutive sets running from 1984-87, Donruss laid on egg big time with its disastrous 1988 baseball card set.  First of all, the design sucked.  Blue and boring and tacky, these cards just didn't LOOK as good as the last few Donruss issues had.  The rookie card selection was not the best...for years collectors chased the Mark Grace RC to some degree, but when it became obvious he would never hit with power and never make the Hall of Fame, interest in his Donruss rookie card decreased.  There are rookie cards of good players such as Ron Gant and Matt Williams and Ken Caminiti but none of those guys will make the Hall of Fame.  The two "jewels" of the set are the Tom Glavine and Roberto Alomar rookie cards.  Even those cards have low values of a buck or two even in prime condition because of the biggest problem that plagued this set....OVERPRODUCTION.  As a Youtube reviewer I saw said about this set: "There is probably a printing press somewhere still churning these out they are so overproduced".  This was the first of many overproduced and awful sets from Donruss, however the following year at least had the Ken Griffey RC which maintained a fair amount of interest for a number of years.  On a sacle from 1 to 10, I give this set a "1".
